The honest framing

It behaves more like a graduate contribution than a debt

A student loan does not appear on a credit file, does not affect a mortgage application the way other borrowing does, and cannot be chased if your income falls.

Many mature students never repay the full balance. What they repay is a proportion of the extra they earn because of the degree — and if the degree does not raise their income, they repay very little.
